Characteristics of a Addax

1. The addax is a sandy to almost white color during the summer, darkening to a grayish brown in the winter. White markings are present on the face, ears, belly, hips, and legs, and there is a black tuft of hair on the forehead. Horns are present on both males and females, average about 72 cm in length.

2. A female addax's gestation lasts 257 to 264 days. Females typically give birth to only one baby at a time and have only one baby per year, according to the ADW. Baby addaxes are called calves. Calves are sand-colored so that they blend in with their surroundings to protect them from predators.

3. They will generally stay in one place and only wander widely in search of food. The addax has a strong social structure, probably based on age, and herds are led by the oldest female. Herds are more likely to be found along the northern edge of the tropical rain system during the summer and move north as winter falls.

4. Keystone species like the Addax and the Dama Gazelle are essential for the maintenance of biodiversity, ecological processes and productivity in desert ecosystems. Wildlife's role in the livelihoods of desert dwellers can be significant if managed properly.

5. Addax antelopes have adaptations to help them survive in the desert, like splayed hooves to help them walk in the sand and the ability to get all the water they need from the grasses they eat.

6. The Critically Endangered addax (Addax nasomaculatus) is a true desert-adapted antelope – the only one of its genus (species group) – with all the evolutionary potential that implies for adapting to climate change in our changing world.

7. addax, (Addax nasomaculatus), the most desert-adapted African antelope, formerly found throughout most of the Sahara but nearly exterminated in the wild in the last quarter of the 20th century by poaching from motorized vehicles. The addax's most striking feature is its long spiral horns.

8. They typically have a light, elegant figure, are slender, have graceful limbs, small cloven hoofs and a short tail. Antelopes have powerful hindquarters and, when startled, run with a peculiar bounding stride that makes them look as though they are bouncing over the terrain like a giant rabbit.

9. Antelopes are noted for their beauty, grace, and speed in running. Most are distinguished by upswept, back-curving horns. Their coats of hair are usually golden, reddish tan, or gray, often with white beneath and on the face and rump. Some are strikingly marked.

10. Threats. The greatest threat to Addax is a man as locals hunt them without any limits or supervision. Addax are slow moving animals so they are easy targets for hunters in their jeeps armed with modern weaponry. Their habitats are often being destroyed to make more for more farming or residential land.

11. This desert antelope is mostly white, with a toupee of dark fur crowning its head. But it's the addax's long, twisted horns you'd remember, and that's part of the problem. Since the mid-1800s, the addax has become popular quarry for hunters and poachers who prefer wall decorations to biodiversity.

12. Addax, in their native land, have been hunted extensively for their horns, meat and skin. The Addax Antelope weighs from 130 to 280 pounds. Extremely rare in its native habitat, the Addax is quite common in captivity and is regularly bred on ranches where they are hunted as trophies.
